A Short Course in Natal Chart Interpretation
Paper 5
The process of enquiry- setting questions and finding answers

natal chart

Why do we turn to Astrology? What do we expect it to be able to tell us that other disciplines cannot?  If we are at the stage where we have bothered to embark upon a study of it, clearly, we have expectations of a certain kind and can answer that question, at least for ourselves, and we will probably find that our reasons are shared with those who go as clients to see professional Astrologers

These are the reasons which have been offered to me most often in my professional capacity, and because they revealed why Westerners in 21st Century should turn to Astrology, they have influenced the way I present readings.

  • Because it sees a life from beginning to end and can identify what is important to know about that life.
  • It sees all of us including our spiritual dimension.
  • It is ‘objective’ and can cut through a lot of distracting factors surrounding situations e.eg.: conditioning; what others think/expect.
  • It can see what is coming so we can prepare ourselves.
  • It can tell us why we are in a difficult situation (again).

Of course, there are the other reasons, including simple curiosity, but these five, commonly held perceptions made it clear to me long ago that these are the questions to which Astrologers need to be able to find answers from a natal chart because, collectively, they explain why Astrology still attracts.

Time-working in Astrology is not being handled adequately if practitioners think that transits are all there to it, which increasingly is the trend. But this matter is beyond the scope of this particular course. So, we will stay with the five points made above and the five questions arising from them that clients bring again and again to consultations. Hopefully, the recommendation given for accessing answers to these questions will serve as a procedural guide to other questions.

  1. What is missing from my life?
  2. What should I be doing with my life? I feel there is something for me to do but I don’t know what.
  3. Can you look at my relationship situation?
  4. What work should I be doing?
  5. Moving - does overseas fit into my life?

1.  What is missing from my life)

  1. Find out what the design of the life wants to be in the life – examine Sun sign and house position.
  2. Is the Moon by house and position still dominant? Is Saturn controlling choices?
  3. Examine the house position of the Part of Fortune
  4. Examine Venus by sign and house placement for present life values
  5. Examine Mars by sign and house placement for what truly motivates

2. What should I be doing with my life?

  1. Sun by sign and house position
  2. Ascendant sign -ruling planet in which house?
  3. Sign on H5 – any planets in H5?
  4. Ruler of H5 in which house?

3. Can you look at my relationship situation?

  1. Find out what is the developmental role of relationship in the life of the individual as distinct from conditioned expectation.
  2. Sign on the cusp of H7 shows energy required to balance Ascendant sign.
  3. Ruler of H7 significator of relationships with commitment or expectation of commitment
  4. Any planets in H7?
  5. Our capacity to love Moon, Venus, Mars. What is the relationship of each to Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto? The stressful aspects will affect the capacity to give and receive love and commitment.

4. What work should I be doing

  1. Direction of the life - Sun by sign and house position. Pay attention to the Area of Consciousness because it is unlikely that an individual will be comfortable working outside that occupied by the Sun/and or inner planets.
  2. Sign on cups of H2 for attitude to material stability Is this in conflict with a sense of fulfilment?
  3. Sign on MC – ruler of H10 in which house? Any planets in H10?
  4. Sign on cusp of H6? Ruler of H6 in which house? Any planets in H6
  5. Sign on cusp of H5? Ruler pf H5 in which house? Any planets in H5

5. Moving – does overseas have a place in my life?

  1. Look at H3 and H4 – Jupiter or Venus in either house recommends staying in motherland
  2. Saturn or Uranus in H3 or H4 predispose to overseas residence because the individual will feel restricted in country of birth.
  3. Uranus in H10 – indicates a desire to get out of the fatherland, usually for political or religious reason
  4. Jupiter or Venus in H9 indicate good fortune overseas. With Venus in H9 a persona will often marry someone from a different culture and settle there.
  5. Sign on cusp of H9 indicates which parts of the world will suit. This is quite a study in its own right but broadly speaking: Capricorn North to cold climates; Pisces Antipodes; Sagittarius India, Australia; Aries – hot dry and frequently dangerous places; Leo -West Indies; Cancer USA; Taurus, Gemini & Virgo not too far away from land of birth of different or similarity of culture; Libra Far East – Buddhist cultures; Scorpio – Turkey Middle East
