Work in Progress: DKF Students share their work

The D.K. Foundation is now five years old and in that time many students have been and gone and some who arrived early on are still with us, making real progress. Each student featured in Work in Progress has made headway because he or she has cleared a space in their lives to make room for their astrological studies and worked consistently hard.

In Work in Progress these students share their work and are willing to answer any questions that interested website visitors might want put to them, whether those questions are about their work, their experience of being with the Foundation, or about astrology in general. There is no party line. Students are encouraged to speak honestly about their experiences.

Samir Boutalbi

Samir lives in Brussels, Belgium and works in a university Student Affairs department, offering guidance to potential and new students and handling applications.

His personal interest is in spirituality, from the philosophical angle but also from the point of view of its application in everyday life. The Sagittarian theme is strong in Samir’s life. He is a natural questor and his quest for understanding has taken him into many different occult and healing activities.

He became a Foundation student in order to give more structure to his knowledge and to learn to apply it in a more effective manner.

The Zodiacal Signs

1. FOCUS of the signs : polarities, based on duality (self/other or personality/soul)

Fire: physical plane expression of spirit, the quality of the mental plane

- active, wilful, impatient, radiates, energetic and inspired/inspiring, full of faith in life and the cosmos, assertive and self-conscious

The energy of fire signs displays a strong will. It may be tempted to impose itself on other more subtle energies, and can at times lack flexibility.

It inspires to idealism, being active, taking initiatives and expressing leadership.

It needs a life lived in a conscious manner and has a direct spontaneous way of looking at the world. It also likes attention and reaction to its activity.

Though never totally satisfied with what is perceived, the fire energy can always find a useful and positive occupation to steer things in the right direction.

Earth: physical plane expression of materiality, the quality of the physical plane itself

- feminine, negative energy, that bears (also in the sense of sustaining) in itself what is hidden but must eventually manifest, introverted and restrictive (protective) nature

- able to utilize the senses and concrete abilities, patient, disciplined, concentrated, enduring and persistent, grounded, cautious, reliable

The energy of earth signs displays a type of negative tension, an expectative attitude, and a certain toughness.

It can at times be distrustful and prefers certainty and security above the unexpected and the risky.

It is primarily concerned with quality and solidity, and with the fundamentals and cornerstones of physical manifestation. It needs to work with the physical world and to connect within a concrete natural environment.

Facing the strange and the unknown can be experienced as problematic. Once the earth energy overcomes its fear, it can be totally counted upon.

Air: physical plane expression of intellect, the quality of the etheric plane

- masculine, positive energy, that comes from within and generates vehicles for ideas, expansive nature

- all pervasive and inter-penetrating influence, needs to circulate, to mingle ideas, to conceptualise, creative, dreamy, gives talent for imagination and thinking, social interaction (sociable) and organization, is not very practical

The energy of air signs is at home mostly anywhere and has a strong need for variety and changes.

It can also bring restlessness and inconstancy.

It is concerned with all types and forms of intellectual activity and produces smooth talk and social interaction.

Naturally inclined to joy and happiness, the air energy is often forced to acquire more depth and substance through the experience of life.

Water: physical plane expression of emotion, the quality of the astral plane

- feminine, negative energy, relating to the inner life, sensitive and restrictive nature

- capable of deep emotions and connectedness, subjective life experience, sensitive and intuitive, tuning into what’s unconscious or too subtle to grasp otherwise, protective or secretive

The energy of water signs is directed within and displays a need to live the life through the feelings, and gives little resistance against harshness and rude life experiences because of the need to work with that kind of experiences.

It is concerned with finding and developing perception through sensitivity.

It produces a sense of affective harmony and a love for beautiful memories, intense emotions and the mysterious.

It sometimes brings the need for a protective and protected environment, to be able to express itself. This can lead to a lack of flexibility and unwillingness to let go of what it is attached to.

It needs an intimate circle, of friends or family, to be able to let go, relax or enjoy, but when expressing its warm-hearted and gentle nature, the water energy is much valued and appreciated.

MODE of the signs : quadruplicities, based on quality (how they go about doing things in life, the methods they apply to obtain results)

Cardinal: initiating mode

This mode is about initiating action and leading / guiding / directing the energy involved.

There is a willingness to take charge and responsibility and (re)act promptly from an inner conviction.

Outside influences are acknowledged, appropriated and integrated according to the own principles.

Making own choices and putting them into action.

Extroverted influence.

Fixed: persevering mode

This mode is about persevering in a course of action (or inaction) and maintaining / retaining / stabilizing the energy involved.

There is a willingness to persist, confront and overcome hardship and difficulties and to reach set goals.

Outside influences are resisted and rejected as obstacles (however in e and h they must eventually be accepted?).

Following through and attaining the set objectives.

Introverted influence.

Mutable: experimenting mode

This mode is about experimenting with activities and discovering / exploring / adapting to the energy involved.

There is a willingness to go wherever it’s needed, to change perspectives in function of the circumstances and to bend instead of breaking (to be flexible).

Outside influences are absorbed and allowed to work their way through

Exploring new possibilities and experiencing the freedom to change direction.

Alternately extroverted and introverted influence.
