the DK Foundations article on
‘ The Ten Commandments on Everyday Living: 7’
Donate some time and effort to the world at large: e.g, pick up litter every day, feed the birds, put out water for animals, plant something, avoid becoming motivated by the gratitude of others and the expectation of reward.

As already mentioned in my previous article (Bush Gardenia), our way of living today promotes a more stressful way of being; we have become more self-absorbed and are fighting for our bit of space, but we do need to share it with others. Many people feel fearful of this crowded way of living and close down as a result, firmly shutting out their immediate environment. As a result we shield ourselves from the things that go on with people in our road. We may view our house and garden as our country and war breaks out if the neighbours overstep the boundaries of space and noise.
This is the reality for many… but we can change it; as I said previously: “Change the world, begin with yourself” (and others will follow).
In this overly self-conscious age people will feel conspicuous sweeping their little bit of pavement outside their houses because it is not the done thing. I was brought up in Holland and everyone seemed to take responsibility for the bit of ‘public’ pavement outside their houses. My mother taught me to sweep up and keep clean, so mess is not walked into the house. I have continued to do this where I live now in England. I was the only person in our road! But occasionally I have spotted a neighbour doing the same now! Lead by giving the example and others will follow. It doesn’t really involve a lot of time and effort. And you are doing something for the environment too… little attention and kindness goes a long way.

This month I want to share some essences, which promote kindness, altruism and selflessness.

Bluebell – (Wahlenbergia)

This flower belongs to the Campanula family and is related to the English Harebell. There are many varieties in this species. It is a perennial herb that grows up to 50cm high and this essence is for generosity of heart and sharing.
Bluebell is an essence for opening the heart especially for those who are cut off from their feelings. Not that they don’t have feelings but they choose to ignore them and remain unexpressed.

On some level people needing this essence are afraid to let go of their feelings and also of their possessions because they may feel that there is not enough to go around. People may appear as forthright, rigid and controlled. But they only appear that way; they are not necessarily like that on the inside.
Ian White, the founder of the Bush Flower Essences mentions with this essence in his book a quote from G. Jampolsky (Love is letting go of fear) “Giving means extending one’s love with no conditions, no expectations and no boundaries… The giving motivation leads to a sense of inner peace and joy that is unrelated to time”
Kangaroo Paw – (Anigozanthos Manglesii)
This amazing flower resembles the paw of a kangaroo and it is the state emblem of western Australia.
This is a short-lived herbaceous perennial and grows up to 1 meter high. It thrives after bush-fires or land clearing; it can be crowded out by longer-lived plants, but after a fire or clearing of the land it will thrive again.
This essence brings out and kindness to others and sensitivity to the needs of others. It helps to feel comfortable with people from different backgrounds and personalities – to understand what they need. Kangaroo Paw may help if you may feel clumsy socially or have difficulty relating or dealing with others or when you feel out of place.
There may be awkwardness in dealing with others – it should help to feel more relaxed when trying to sort situations when you are at unease. This essence can give relief if social situations create tension. Also for people who are unaware of creating a tension in others, for people who are unaware or insensitive of the needs of others.
Bush Gardenia – (Gardenia Megasperma)
See also previous article.
It is the essence that helps people who are caught up in their own world. People who have little time and are unaware of what is really happening with others who are important in their lives or the ones less important, to take an interest in affairs outside yourself. It helps to get you out of your head into your surroundings with an open heart.

Recommended dosage: 7 drops morning and night for 3-4 weeks
Combinations may be made up of various essences that you feel you may need.
