This month, I am writing about the Solar Plexus chakra, which is the third article in this series.

Solar Plexus Chakra—Manipura—Third Chakra
Colour: Yellow
Location: Solar Plexus, Stomach, above belly button
Focus: Power, Will, Desire, Emotions
Orientation: Self-definition
Rights: To act
Identity: Ego
Demon: Shame
Esoteric: This chakra governs the pancreas (liver, gallbladder, stomach)
Goal:
This chakra is the seat of desire and it is the clearing-house for emotions and energies of the lower chakras where they will be redistributed to the higher chakras. It is also connected to will and power.
The solar plexus would be operating at its full optimum capacity, when you have a clear goal or vision, and you would go for it, and nothing could stop you from achieving your goal. Here the will and desire have become fused. To be confident with who we are, without fear or reservation, assertively expressing what and whom we are, knowing what we want to achieve, without controlling and manipulating others. Respecting self and others’ boundaries is the way to balance this chakra. Being assertive is the middle and balanced road; being aggressive is one extreme and being yielding or submissive is the other extreme.
This chakra is therefore also governing ego and power. A person with a strong will is likely to be more domineering or abusive. Whereas people with a weaker will is likely to be servile and yielding – they give their power away. Both are liable to use this energy for self and material pursuits for security or self-satisfaction.
The energy of the solar plexus can be driven up into the heart (and higher centres), where its energy is used for selfless love and if wishing to escape from being bound by form. (In DK’s words, to transmute desire into aspiration). In our society its energy has become fused and confused with the sacral chakra due to the importance we have given sexual desire above spiritual or creative desire. Therefore the desire from the solar plexus is driven down into the sacral area and used for
self-gratification.
Through this chakra we are linked to the rest of
humanity and there is a special link with the heart and ajna or brow
chakra. Once the solar plexus becomes active, there is a downward flow
from the brow into the heart. At this point the person can make a choice
whether to direct the energy upward or keep it in the lower centres.
Excessive characteristics: Abusing power, domineering, authoritarian, bossy, selfish, aggressive, irritability, anger, egoistic, blaming, manipulating and controlling personality, greed.
Deficient characteristics: Being dominated, yielding, helplessness, indecision, slave/doormat behaviour, weak will, poor self esteem, passivity, fearful, suppression of anger, fear of rejection, sensitive to criticism,
These characteristics can lead to problems with: Digestive organs, stomach, liver, gall-bladder, duodenum, gastro-intestinal tract, spleen, nervous system, lower back, moodswings, anger, sadness, passion.
Ailments:
Stomach ulcers, indigestion, diabetes, hepatitis, gallstones, liver complaints, food allergies
