During
the following months, I will be writing a set small articles about the
chakras starting with the base chakra. Although there is a lot of
information on the web and in book-form, it can be confusing as there are
different systems and colour associations. I will just touch on basic
information to help you, the reader, get a concise understanding about
each chakra.
The
Map of the Chakras
The
chakra system is an ancient map of 7 major energy centres in the body.
These are positioned from the base of our spine to the top of our heads.
These centres are feeding the endocrine system and related glands. Each
chakra’s energy resonates at a certain frequency, which is the same
frequency as the colour related to that chakra.
The
three lower chakras limit and confine us. They correlate to our basic
primary needs—those of survival, procreation, and will. They represent
our earthly connection—all things material and physical.
The
three upper chakras liberate and expand us. These are concerned with our
psychological aspects—defining love, communication, and knowledge. They
represent our connection with the spiritual or internal realms.
The
heart is the fourth chakra and is the bridge between the upper chakras and
the lower chakras and crucial in the process of connecting both levels.
We
have to live in the physical world effectively before we can balance all
the chakras. This means that you have to start by being grounded—it has
to be the starting point of all journeys! If not, dis-ease ensues. Balance
is the key to health and happiness, awareness and spirituality. It is only
when a person is grounded, that balance can be brought about. (The energy
starts to rise from the base chakra up to the crown chakra). To be a
healthy and balanced individual, one has got to ‘live’ in all one’s
centres. Once this has been achieved, one can develop more balance and
maturity in the 3 upper chakras.
It
is a major challenge for people in this age to open their heart chakra.
This process becomes easier if we are selflessly involved with giving
something of ourselves into our environment, it doesn’t matter how
small.

Goal:
This
chakra is positioned at the bottom of the spine and is the numbered
‘1’ as it is the first of the seven chakras and synonymous with the
starting point of the spiritual journey. It represents the life force. It
is concerned with the concrete material world and being rooted and
grounded in it. It is of paramount importance that on one’s life
journey, where transcending the physical, and spirituality awareness is
the aim, one starts off being grounded and being here. We have incarnated
to be here on the physical plane, not to live in the spiritual realms, to
be effective and consequently change consciousness by learning on this
dense level. Balance is the key to health and happiness, spirituality and
awareness. One needs to have the feet solidly on the ground in order to
function optimally on the material plane. Practicality and the ability to
put ideas into practice are base chakra issues. When this chakra is
functioning well, general energy and stamina improves and this energy is
able to rise to the higher chakras.
